I can’t hide that my deep appreciation for “The Chief” stems from a 45-minute sound-check on a sunny summer afternoon, when he decided to put the stage on fire with his incendiary guitar-solos and spirited singing for the audience, i.e. three lads with cameras who were trying to get some pictures without the pressure of the security. A true gift. Then I may not be the most impartial judge, but this Alligator release, despite its distinctive redundant production, is a first-rate collection of Chicago Blues.
Uno dei segni distintivi di Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater è una certa sobrietà sonora, un’asciuttezza che l’ha fatto apprezzare assieme alla capacità non comune di scrivere delle grandi canzoni - qui troverete una versione rivista e corretta di “I Came Up the Hard Way” – quindi l’unione artistica con Ronnie Baker Brooks, chitarrista-cantante che ancora non ha saputo emulare il talento del padre Lonnie, faceva ovviamente temere il peggio. Ronnie é un muscolare che fa del Rock’n’Blues a volumi da aereoporto internazionale mentre “The Chief” è un maestro delle mezze luci che s’infuoca improvvisamente sugli slow-blues. Incidere per Alligator avrebbe dovuto far pender l’ago della bilancia verso Brooks e in effetti questo è un disco con troppi strumenti, troppa produzione, troppa musica. Eppure alla fine “The Chief” vince la sua battaglia nonostante la zavorra: troppo bravo per affondare. Pezzi roboanti come “Hypnotized”, “Too old to get married” e “They call me the Chief” si mischiano a momenti più riflessivi come la splendida “Do Unto Others” con Otis Clay e Jimmy Johnson che s’alternano al canto, “I came up the Hard Way”, l’originale “Rock-a-Blues” e una “Trouble, trouble” - omaggio a Lowell Fulson - al fulmicotone. Un gran disco.
