Early 80’s Captain Beefheart cohorts Gary Lucas dedicates a compelling musical tribute to Don Van Vliet with as much as his own creativity into it. The project started in Italy and we are proud of it!

Gary Lucas did more than being Captain Beefheart ‘s buddy in the early eighties. His musical contribution to history must include discovering Jeff Buckley, revitalising downtown New York City music scene every two year or so. But it is the Don Van Vliet’s adventurous trip to nowhere that made him a real musician. With Fast ‘n’ Bulbous and with the add of Philip Johnstone ‘s Brass Score Gary Lucas is actually playing the Captain Beefheart’m music the way he wanted to hear it 25 years ago but with a contemporary twist added. He does the same with the Magik Band itself sometime soon again( we hope so…watch out for the DVd!!!!).
“Pork chop Blue around the rind “ is a weird trip. Those who had the opportunity to see the whole bunch of songs performed live in Reggio Emilia cannot forget the excitement on stage as well in between the audience. Same feeling the reviewer had watching the Magik Band performing live in London some of the great “Trout Mask Replica “’s music by some of the original performer. Lucas does more than playing those complicated sheet of music (if any…). He puts all his love and affection into that, he explores the limitless boundaries of the harmolodic qualities of Don Van Vliet vision of music and sound. Philip Johnston is the real ace in the pocket of the project and his charts make completely sense to Cpt Beefheart’s music lovers.
If there must have been only one way to bring Van Vliet music ahead, this is it!
